Prep Your Home for Summer: A Simple Homeowner Checklist
Prep Your Home for Summer: A Simple Homeowner Checklist
Summer is right around the corner—and the last thing any homeowner wants is an air conditioner that quits during the first heat wave. A little seasonal prep can go a long way to keep your home cool, comfortable, and energy efficient all summer long.
At JDK, we’ve put together a quick and easy homeowner checklist to help you get ahead of the heat before temperatures rise.
Your Summer Home Prep Checklist:
- Replace Your Furnace & AC Filters: Your air filter plays a huge role in your system’s performance. Dirty filters restrict airflow, make your system work harder, and can even impact your indoor air quality.
Pro Tip: If you have pets, allergies, or ongoing renovations, you may need to replace filters more often.
- Clear Debris Around Your Outdoor AC Unit: Over the fall and winter months, leaves, dirt, branches, and debris can build around your outdoor condenser unit. Your AC needs proper airflow to cool effectively.

What to do:
✔ Remove leaves, weeds, and debris around the unit
✔ Keep at least 2 feet of clear space around it
✔ Gently rinse off dirt buildup with a garden hose if needed

- Don’t Forget to Remove Your AC Cover: This one might sound obvious… but it’s one of the most common things homeowners forget each spring.
Before turning on your air conditioner, make sure any winter cover or tarp has been removed from the outdoor unit.
Running your AC while covered can restrict airflow and potentially damage the system.

- Test Your AC Before the Hot Weather Hits: Don’t wait until the hottest day of the year to find out something isn’t working properly.
Turn your AC on early in the season and make sure:
✔ Cool air is coming from vents
✔ Your thermostat is functioning properly
✔ There are no unusual noises or smells

- Check Outdoor Hose Bibs for Leaks: Winter can be tough on outdoor plumbing. Frozen water left in hose bibs or outdoor faucets can sometimes lead to cracks or leaks.
What to look for:
✔ Dripping faucets
✔ Water leaking around connections
✔ Reduced water pressure
